Information on Heidelberg

The 13th International Plant Sulfur Workshop will be held in a hybrid format at the Centre for Organismal Studies in Heidelberg (Germany). Heidelberg is located approximately 80 km from Frankfurt/Main International Airport and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The city on the Neckar River fascinates millions of visitors annually and offers something for everyone to discover and experience. Its main attractions are the world-famous Heidelberg Castle, the romantic old town, and the oldest German University, founded in 1386.


Information on Host

The Centre for Organismal Studies belongs to the Faculty of Biosciences of Heidelberg University and is distributed at six locations of the Heidelberg Research Campus (INF). The conference will take place in the major lecture hall of building INF 230 (Maps and Directions). The Google Maps location of INF 230 is shown at the end of this website.

Travel

To travel from distant international destinations to Heidelberg, Germany, you will generally need to fly to a major city nearby since Heidelberg does not have an international airport. Here is how you can reach Heidelberg:

1. Fly to Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Frankfurt Airport is the closest major international airport to Heidelberg, located about 80 km (50 miles) away. It is one of the largest airports in Europe, and it has frequent flights from many international destinations.

You can find direct flights to Frankfurt from major international airports on airlines like Lufthansa, United Airlines, Japan Airlines, China Airlines and many others. We recommend using search sites like Trip.com to find the cheapest and most convenient flight.

2. Transfer from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg

Once you arrive in Frankfurt, there are several options to travel to Heidelberg:

By Train:

Direct train: The most convenient way is to take a direct train from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg. The Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) offers frequent train services. The journey takes about 50-60 minutes. Alternatively, one can travel to the city of Mannheim using more frequent trains and change to a local train to Heidelberg.

By Bus

You can also take a long-distance bus from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg, but it takes longer than the train (around 1.5 to 2 hours) and may not be as comfortable.

By Car:

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car at Frankfurt Airport. The drive takes about 1 hour via the A5 highway.

3. Fly to Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Another option is to fly to Stuttgart Airport, about 120 km (75 miles) from Heidelberg.

There are fewer direct flights from the international destinations to Stuttgart, but it's still a viable option. From Stuttgart, you can take a train to Heidelberg, which takes around 1.5 hours.

4. Fly to Munich Airport (MUC)

Munich Airport is further away (around 300 km or 190 miles), but also an option if you can’t find flights to Frankfurt or Stuttgart. The train ride from Munich to Heidelberg takes about 3.5 hours.

5. Additional Tips:

Book in advance: Flights, trains, and buses are generally cheaper if booked well in advance.
