Alessia Fornoni obtained both her Ph.D. in Medical Pharmacology and her M.D. from the University of Pavia, Italy. In parallel she did her Intern at the Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, University Hospital Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia. In 2001, she started working as a House-staff physician in Internal Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami. She continued her work as an assistant professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine, before becoming associate professor and chair at the Peggy and Harold Katz Family Drug Discovery Center. Since 2016, she is also chief of the division of Nephrology and Hypertension, University of Miami.
Her research interests focus on metabolic signaling pathways and their impact on podocyte function in kidney and beta cell function in pancreas. Prof. Fornoni and her lab members were the first ones to identify important roles of spingholipids and cholesterol in podocytes. Next to basic research approaches, Prof. Fornoni impresses with her experience in running clinical studies that involve experimental therapeutics.
