The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS)

Founded on 1st January 1964, The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) encompasses thousands of members across more than 35 biochemistry and molecular biology societies (its 'Constituent Societies') in different countries of Europe and neighbouring regions. As a grass-roots organization FEBS thereby provides a voice to a large part of the academic research and teaching community in Europe and beyond.

As a charity, FEBS promotes and supports biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, molecular biophysics and related research areas through its journals, Congress, Advanced Courses, Fellowships and other initiatives. There is an emphasis in many programmes on scientific exchange and cooperation between scientists working in different countries, and on promotion of the training of early-career scientists.

For more information about FEBS and FEBS Advanced Courses, please visit the FEBS website or the Advanced Courses section of the FEBS website.

FEBS Travel Grants

A limited number of FEBS Youth Travel Funds (YTF) Awards are available to support participation of early-career scientists in this event. These funds will cover parts of the registration fee (including meals and shared accommodation in a twin room), up to a maximum of 500 EUR per person. The selection of applicants to receive FEBS YTF awards will be carried out by the Course Organizers, and approved by the FEBS Treasury Office according to the FEBS YTF eligibility criteria. Applicants must be member of FEBS or of a partnering national society.

IUBMB Transcontinental-YTF grants

There is also a Transcontinental-YTF (Trans-YTF) grant of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) available for one PhD student or one postdoctoral scientist from outside the FEBS area, provided by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB). Details on the eligibility criteria of the IUBMB Trans-YTF, which is up to $2,000 to cover registration and travel costs, is available from the FEBS website.

The applicants should send their completed grant applications (CV, letter of motivation, abstract and confirmation that you will not receive further funding, letter of recommendation by advisor or mentor) and proof of eligibility to Carmela Giglione asap.

Eligibility criteria for IUBMB Trans-YTF Grant applicants:

  • The applicant should not be older than 35, registered as a PhD student at an institute of higher learning in a country where there is an IUBMB-adhering body but not a FEBS Constituent Society, or should be a postdoctoral scientist within five years of having completed a PhD thesis, working in a country where there is an IUBMB-adhering body but not a FEBS Constituent Society.
  • The applicant must be a member of an IUBMB-adhering body and must provide evidence of membership.
  • The applicant should not have received a grant from FEBS to attend a FEBS Advanced Course in the current or previous year, nor a bursary to attend the FEBS Congress in the current year, nor a grant to attend the FEBS Young Scientists’ Forum in the current year.
